Elwood Board of Ed Enjoys Holiday Cheer, Honors Student Athletes

The Elwood School District’s Dec. 11 Board of Education meeting began with a delightful bit of holiday cheer from James H. Boyd Intermediate School’s singers, who performed “Once Upon a December” from “Anastasia” as well as Theresa Jennings’ challenging “Snow.”

Next, Athletic Director Dave Shanahan took the podium to honor the Elwood-John H. Glenn varsity boys soccer team, who won the Long Island Class A championship last month.

“This past fall, our athletic department truly reached new heights.” Shanahan said. “The boys soccer team delivered a season of historic significance, and their playoff run was nothing short of incredible. At the end of the day, it is the true heart and lasting value of all high school sports that and these memories were created and will last a lifetime.”

Also honored that night were two extremely dedicated individual athletes: Samantha Williamson, who was named team captain of the combined swimming team and earned All-League and All-County honors, and Camryn Szokoli, who earned All-State status at the New York State cross-country championships and won the Section XI Sportsmanship Award.

“You represent the very best of our community and you have brought great pride to your families and your outstanding school district,” said Assemblyman Steve Stern, who presented the athletes with proclamations.
